How it started: "Two weeks to flatten the curve."

How it's going: "There is nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic in the next several months."

I'm getting increasingly worried that medical science is about to find a new, widespread, and terrifying cause of dementia.

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

I'm not sure which one is dumber.

Photos taken yesterday of the 458 new quarantine centres for COVID-19 that are being built in Shijiazhuang, China.

Currently they're claiming 180cases/day, out of a 1.4 billion population.

I personally don't trust that number.

Re user's being confused, here's an example.

Even with control of no hashing power at all, you can very occasionally do double spends of confirmed transactions. You just have to be lucky enough for a stale block to get mined at the right time.

Stale blocks are pretty rare these days. I don't have stats handy. But looks like the % is something like 1 in 1000 blocks or less. So that'd be a sub 0.1% chance of success per attempt.

Andreas is incorrect here. A double spend _did_ happen.

Bitcoin's double-spend protection is probabilistic: after one confirmation, if the sender is attempting to double spend, the probability of success is extremely low. But it's still non-zero.

California just passed Florida in cumulative reported cases per capita.

Florida has about twice as many elderly per-capita as California. Adjusting for demographics, CA passed FL in terms of cumulative deaths about a month ago.

After almost a year of hard lockdown all they've achieved is a ruined economy, and thousands of non-covid excess deaths among younger demographics.

The tyrants pushing unscientific lockdowns have young blood on their hands.

Neat tamper-evidence packaging concept: a random pattern of beads that's modified when you open the package, along with a smartphone app to automatically verify the pattern is correct.

Reusable glitter basically: to fake a seal, you need to make the significant effort of positioning each bead in the right place. Possible. But very time consuming.

I'd buy one!

"provide a photo that proves it really is your [Bitcoin] address"

I'm really curious what type of photo Bitstamp thinks constitutes proof that a given Bitcoin address belongs to you...

So Biden is going to have 200,000 flags instead of people at the inauguration.

Interesting question: how far in advance do you have to order 200,000 flags? Because I'm guessing they've been planning on no-one attending in person for months.

Typical journalism: "OMG OUT OF 32,000 PEOPLE VAXED, JUST ONE GOT SEVERE COVID!"

...leaving you to imagine hundreds of unvaxed getting terribly sick and dying.

Reality: only 10 people got severe covid in the Pfizer trial, _in total_. 9 with placebos, 1 with the vaccine. For Moderna, the numbers are 11 severe cases with placebos, 0 or 1 with vax (possible false positive).

...and severe didn't even mean hospitalization! Out of 21 "severe" cases, just 8 were hospitalized. No deaths.

There's also self-described anti-fascist John Sullivan, who was arrested for leading the charge during the insurrection at the Capitol.

It's almost like the real world is more complex than the neat little boxes journalists and politicians want to put you in.

“Prepare our weapons, and then go get’em. Lets hunt these cowards down like the Traitors that each of them are”

The face of the <checks notes> right-wing white supremacy movement.

Birdsite blue checks never let the facts get in the way of 102k endorphin hits.

Parler has a static status page up. Not the whole site. And the page resolves to an IP address in Belize. Last I checked, that's in South America.

"I WANT TO BELIEVE!"

Pretty lol how low-density "red" states with much harder distribution challenges like West Virginia, Alaska, and the Dakotas are the ones doing best at actually vaccinating people. While high-density "blue" states like New York and California are way behind, even though they have every advantage. California is in 5th last place!

It's almost like red states are actually trying to solve a problem rather than milk covid forever for political gains...

@verretor Looks like they weren't even trying. 😂

"AOC’s Comms Director Asks Twitter To Ban Users From Citing AOC’s Support For Violent Riots" thefederalist.com/2021/01/07/a

The hilarious part is the staffer retweeted the thread in question herself: twitter.com/LaurenHitt/status/

"uncomfortable" is a much more clear incitement to violence than the ridiculous official rational Twitter gave for banning Trump...

"Still going to the grocery store? With new virus variants spreading, it’s probably time to stop."

Don't worry Vox, I've switched to cannibalism.
