ngl i'm extremely jaded about tech nowadays, and it's entirely possible it's only a temporary hype again, but it's awesome how mastodon/fediverse seems to be taking off
@orionwl It does seem to have undergone a phase change, albeit a small one. It sounds "elitist" but when you have a barrier to entry ("mastodon is hard/weird/not like twitter"), the filter effect results in much higher quality discourse.
@jcorgan i think that's true, though if it results in hardly having anyone to talk to or a very narrow slice of the population able to use it, it can limit success of the platform. in my experience that's been a common theme with FOSS social media/chat software
but i don't think that's the case for mastodon, it's weird, maybe, but not technically much harder to use than other social media sites
