The Prestige (2006)
A bafflingly stupid high budget, all-star cast film which received critical acclaim. It's actually impossible to describe the knotted plot of this film. I don't even think I can.
The best way to sum it up is: REDDIT MOVIE. Nikola Tesla is for some reason a literal wizard.
There are two magicians. They want to be the best magician in England. Early on, one kills the other's wife during a failed trick. This starts their rivalry.
From here, it gets more and more confusing and it never stops. They hurt each other, one loses two fingers, the other gets crippled. One is a good performer but a lousy magician, the other is a lousy performer but a good magician. The better performer makes more money using dumbed down versions of the other's tricks.
I am never clear which magician is which throughout the movie. They look similar and it isn't always obvious who it is since they wear disguises a lot.
The rest of the movie is about a particular trick: The Transported Man. The magician is teleported. It is invented by the magician with the family, and coveted by the guy who lost his wife. It is assumed that the inventor must be teleporting somehow, because he is missing 2 fingers from the aforementioned hijinks.
However, the rival just starts using a body double to imitate the trick and sell it better. He is obsessed with figuring out the teleporting trick, and is unsatisfied with using body doubles as the first one he uses extorts him. To get the trick, he sends his wife over to get it. She ends up loving the better magician and leaves her husband for him.
This is now where the shittier magician spends his fortune trying to get Nikola Tesla to build him a teleporter. He literally travels to meet Nikola Tesla to buy a teleporter. Nikola Tesla gives him a teleporter, but there's a trick: IT TOTALLY DUPLICATES EVERYTHING PUT INTO IT BEFORE TELEPORTING IT, INCLUDING LIVING CREATURES, EXACTLY AS THEY ARE.
So this fucking device is used to put on a grand scheme and end the rivalry: Magician will use the teleporter, clone himself, and have himself dunk into water below the stage so that only one copy of him exists. When his rival shows up, they'll frame him for murdering the copy dunked under water. It works, and he's hanged for murder.
It is then revealed that the shittier magician actually had an identical brother who cut off his own fingers to mirror his brother's wounds, and they used a body double the whole time. He kills the guy and Nikola's matter duplication device is destroyed.
STUPID MOVIE. JUST DUPLICATE GOLD BARS OR SOMETHING. SELL IT TO GERMANY SO THEY CAN MAKE AN ARYAN CLONE ARMY. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING.

@josh Nah, you completely misunderstood the movie.
Re-watch it, thinking carefully about who is actually telling you what. It's not a sci-fi movie. It's a movie about fraud. There are key scenes shown on screen that are being *told* by dishonest people; that doesn't mean those events actually happened as claimed.
Importantly, in real life, Tesla became a fraud later in life.
Bro he made a matter duplication machine.
