@alex The real question is why did we even invent MAC addresses? Why not just use IPs?
...and IPv6 setups almost kinda do that, with MAC address-like link-local addresses, used exclusively for the local LAN broadcast domain communication (though, that can mean getting packets to your gateway!). Though under the hood, mac addresses are still used, because ethernet requires them.
